Cosmetic Dentistry, is it an art or a science? Cosmetic dentistry is both an art and a science.

Just like every person is unique, every smile is unique. And so every dental implant treatment will be similar, but the dental implants will be made unique to the smile and mouth of the dental patient. Dental implant treatment means that there will actually be a dental implant or false-tooth that will replace the missing teeth. Dental implants are anchored to the bone of the jaw just like natural teeth are. So dental implants must look like a real tooth or real teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry is an art in making a smile conform to the ideals and desires of the dental patient. So, with the artistic eye of the cosmetic dentist, the cosmetic dentist will take information from the discussion with the cosmetic dentistry patients and then go from there in making dental implants or dental veneers or any other permanent type of teeth replacements. A cosmetic dentist must pay attention to the details of how light reflects of natural teeth and how light reflects off of the dental implant or dental veneers. Cosmetic dentistry skills must make the dental implants, dental veneers, etc. reflect light as natural teeth do by maybe creating little ridges or making sure the dental veneers, dental implants, etc. are the right color and shape. Cosmetic dentistry definitely requires focus on details. These details like how the light reflects off of teeth is one of many details that cosmetic dentistry must be trained to do, just as an artist is trained to see the world in different perspectives of light and color.

Now that we have established that cosmetic dentistry is an art and requires an artistic eye to focus on details of making dental implants or dental veneers, etc we come to the second part of cosmetic dentistry–the medical science of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry often performs dental surgery that requires giving a dental patient the correct amount of anesthetic. A cosmetic dentist must understand how the anatomy works and have a careful eye to watch for bone loss, gum disease and other issues that may require more healing and dental work before dental implant treatment is started, for example. A cosmetic dentist must be trained as a doctor is trained to know enough about the human anatomy, especially the dental anatomy so that the cosmetic dentist can perform surgery.

There are some cosmetic dentistry procedures that require extensive surgery, for example dental implants. Dental implants require that a cosmetic dentistry team knows how to drill into the jaw-bone to create dental anchors for the dental patient\’s dental implants. Cosmetic dentistry must know enough about the new technology of dental tools and continue their dental education as technology progresses. This and much more is the reason that cosmetic dentistry is a science and an art.
